Secondary Education
Management
First enrolment for grades 11 began in 1998 for Wabag Secondary School and for Kopen in the year 1999. The Enga Provincial Government is anticipating to open two new secondary schools within the plan period. It is anticipated that Pausa High school would be converted cater for the population in the eastern end and the other (yet to be identified ) to cater for people in the western end of the province.
Facilities
There are about 4 secondary schools and 8 high schools in the province. The four secondary schools are Sir Tei Abal Secondary School, Kopen Secondary School, Pausa Lutheran Secondary School and Four Square Secondary School.
Teaching Positions and Teachers
There are 318 secondary school teaching positions in the province. Of this 2% are vacant. The vacancies occurred at the high schools.
Infrastructure and specialist buildings
There are adequate student classrooms in all the secondary schools but almost every school does not have adequate teacher’s houses. This has seriously affected students learning. Most high schools have poorly equipped specialist buildings such as, science laboratories, practical skills block, home economics, computer laboratory and library.
Student Enrolments
There are 10,000 student spaces at the high schools and secondary schools in the province. Of this a total of 9,569 students are actually enrolled at the schools leaving a vacancy of about 4%. Of the actual student enrolled 33% are female students and that is a three percent drop comparing to 2014. The other 4 percent of the places in the high schools and secondary schools are not occupied; this means so many children from the remote locations did not have the opportunity to attend schools. The year’s student teacher ratio in average was 21:1.
